Last Day of Summer

10:03 am.

Well guys, it’s here. Today is my last day of summer vacation. tomorrow, I go back to school for another nine months. My junior year of high school.  Wow.

The weather changed very suddenly; two days ago, it was sunny and humid and hot, and now the sky is overcast with clouds, and it is chilly and breezy.  This rarely happens in Northern Lower Michigan, but I think we might have a first day of school with actual autumn-like weather.

So much has happened this summer. For me, anyway. And, you know, I haven’t done very many posts on my blog here. Hmph.  I guess I’ve just been doing things, and not Internet-ing too much.

All in all, I had  good summer. I listened to good music, I read good books, I had good times with my best friend and my other friends, and I did some writing, too.

I suppose I am refreshed and ready to go back to school.

Happy Birthday, Joe Strummer!

11:21 pm.

Today would be Joe Strummer’s sixty-first birthday.

Joe Strummer (born John Graham Mellor) was one of the most important figures of the Punk movement in England in the seventies and eighties. Best known for his position of lead singer for The Clash, he also went on to do other groups, including The Pogues, The Mescaleros, and others. He died at age fifty from heart issues.

Hey, Yeah!

2:05 pm.

Hey guys, you know what? I think The Cure’s song “Killing an Arab” is about when Meursault kills the guy in the book The Stranger by Albert Camus.

“Killing An Arab”

Standing on the beach
With a gun in my hand
Staring at the sea
Staring at the sand
Staring down the barrel
At the arab on the ground
I can see his open mouth
But I hear no soundI’m alive
I’m dead
I’m the stranger
Killing an arabI can turn
And walk away
Or I can fire the gun
Staring at the sky
Staring at the sun
Whichever I chose
It amounts to the same
Absolutely nothing

I’m alive
I’m dead
I’m the stranger
Killing an arab

I feel the steel butt jump
Smooth in my hand
Staring at the sea
Staring at the sand
Staring at myself
Reflected in the eyes
Of the dead man on the beach
The dead man on the beach

I’m alive
I’m dead
I’m the stranger
Killing an arab

I Went to the Beach.

12:08 pm.

Yesterday I went to the beach. It was hot out, but the water was cold, but I got used to it over time, and eventually I was going fully underwater.

Now, if you’ve been following my blog for its entire existence (actually, I don’t think anyone followed me from that point), you would know from my posts from last summer that my favourite thing to do at the beach is look for beach treasures. And I’m happy to announce that I found some yesterday.

This was my first find of the day. Wow! It is a bottle (obviously), with a height of seven and a half inches and a diameter at its base of two inches. There’s no writing on the sides, but on the bottom it reads “J L & Co L D C 1797”. It doesn’t seem terribly old, but it’s still cool.

This one does seem older. It reads “WELCH’S” on the front and the back. It is five inches tall, and has a diameter at its base of two inches. It’s nicely worn, and I’m happy to welcome it to my collection 🙂

I really don’t need more bottle bottoms, especially ones that have a jagged part of the bottle on it, but I kept this, for a reason. It reads “THIS BOTTLE NOT TO BE SOLD”, which itself is not really impressive; I see that all the time. The reason for which I kept it, though, is that in the center, one can read the word “BOTTLE” again, like it was double-struck when it was made.

This was just so ridiculously large, I had to keep it. I suppose it is the bottom of a pickle jar or something. It has an odd character on it, like a T and an F put together.

Oh, it’s so nice to be back to my game! This was my first time to the beach this summer, and I would say that it was a good day for my collection. 🙂

No More DOMA

11:28 am.

Human-Rights-Campaign-776875

Well, I think most of you, my readers, are from outside of the U.S., and therefore not directly affected by this occurrence, but I would just like to announce that the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) was just struck down earlier this morning by the Supreme Court! It was deemed unconstitutional.

This is a really monumental step on the road of progress and equality for my country, the United States. DOMA is–was–the law that banned the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage legalized by the states. States can still individually make their own laws about the matter on the state level, but thanks to the 5-4 ruling this morning, there is no longer an overarching ban. This was said by Justice Anthony Kennedy in the majority opinion:  “By seeking to displace this protection and treating those persons as living in marriages less respected than others, the federal statute is in violation of the Fifth Amendment.”

The Defense of Marriage Act was signed into law in 1996 by President Bill Clinton. DOMA prevented gay couples whose marriages were recognized on the state level from getting the hundreds of benefits enjoyed by straight couples under federal law.

Like I said before, this is really important. I believe that equality is essential to a functioning society. I have friends who are gay, and this must be so important to them, even more than it is to me. Because this repeal of DOMA means that my gay friends are that much closer to equality, and it is that much easier for them to marry who they love.

So, cheers!

Hm, Recycling?

9:44 am.

Have you guys seen a trailer for Johnny Depp’s new movie, The Lone Ranger? And if you have, are you thinking the same thing as I am?

That, minus the bird, it’s pretty close to his Pirates costume?

Maybe it’s just me. But, just thought I’d point that out 🙂

Regardless, I still love ‘im 😀

Thank you so much, everyone who has been a part of making this blog of mine a lovely thing (to me, anyway).

I had an ice cream cone when I came home from school.

No more school!

Once I have fully recovered from Trigonometry/Pre-Calculus class, I will make a large Pascal’s Triangle. By the way, I passed my trig exam! Yay me! And, I passed all my other classes’ exams with flying colours. I was only really worried about trig, but I passed, so hooray.

These thoughts are becoming increasingly disorganised, so I think I better leave it at the. Love you guys.

First of June

7:50 pm.

Can you guys believe that it is already June?? I mean, I know May always passes at high speed, but it’s June! And all you schoolchildren out there know what that means…the last day of school is just around the corner! Hooray!

Once school’s out, I’ll be able to go to the beach, go to the library, read, write, BLOG, take photos, hang out with friends, all the time. I’ll even probably paint some. Oh, and garage sales! I love ’em, you never know what kind of treasure you could find.

Before school gets out, though, I have to write my research paper for English class (I’ll need to work on that tomorrow…), and take all of my exams.

But, hey, the last day of school is the eleventh…so you know what that means! The eleventh is the one-year anniversary of my blog! In ten days! Wowzers! I can’t believe it’s been almost a year already. It’s so nice to see in my archives list all the months between June 2012 and June 2013. And, I couldn’t do it without all you guys. All your likes, your comments, your follows…thanks so much. They’ve fueled my continuation of blogging. My blog has evolved so much. I’ve made 115 posts (I think that’s the number, anyway), I’ve shared my life, I’ve won some awards along the way, and I’ve met lots of lovely people. I realise I should probably be saying all this in the eleventh, but  just wanted to say it. So, thank you, everyone who has ever looked at my blog. Thanks for being a part of this.
